Fifteen children, the oldest only 6, escaped unharmed from a fire Wednesday at Wells Daycare Center. Springfield Fire Department spokesman George Glenn said the fire started on the first floor while the children were in the basement at 3710 Wayside Drive. The owners of the state licensed daycare center, Mervin and Margaret Wells, led the children to safety. “They smelled smoke, saw the fire upstairs, and exited out a sliding patio door in the basement,” Glenn said. Firefighters found flames in a front bedroom of the house and controlled the blaze within a half- hour. According to firefighters, the fire caused about $30,000 in damage to the building and 20,000 damage to its contents. The cause of the fire is not yet known. While firefighters fought the blaze, Margaret Wells took the children to a neighbors house to escape the subfreezing temperatures. |
